- State Art Collection Vessels to Dock in Clemson Sept. 2
Thursday, August 14, 2008 - From the hands and clay of South Carolina artists, "Points of Departure: Vessel Forms from the State Art Collection" takes a visual journey with ceramic vessels and their evolution in the contemporary ceramic world Sept. 2 – Oct. 26 at the ARTS Center in Clemson. The public is invited to a reception from 7-9 p.m. Sept. 19.
- Artist Fellowship Application Deadline is Oct. 1
Wednesday, August 13, 2008 - The deadline to apply for a 2008-2009 fellowship award from the S.C. Arts Commission is Oct. 1. Artists may apply for an award in visual arts, craft, dance performance and dance choreography. Guidelines and applications are available at www.SouthCarolinaArts.com.
- Partnership presents Little Mountain documentary film at Reunion Festival
Monday, July 28, 2008 - The S.C. Design Arts Partnership will present a documentary film about the history of Little Mountain at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2 in the Little Mountain Elementary School Auditorium, located at 692 Mill Street.

- National Initiative to Help Improve Conditions for SC Artists
Wednesday, June 25, 2008 - Leveraging Investments in Creativity (LINC), a national initiative to improve conditions for artists, has awarded the South Carolina Arts Commission a $100,000 project grant. The Arts Commission will use the funds to implement practical strategies that address key concerns of S.C. artists.
- Young Adults in Columbia Invited to Join New Audience Road Show
Friday, June 13, 2008 - The S.C. Arts Commission is accepting applications for the 2008-2009 New Audience Road Show. The program provides a behind-the-scenes look at what is involved in creating and presenting art for the stage, screen and wall. Applications for the program, which is open to Columbia-area residents ages 23-39, are available online at www.SouthCarolinaArts.com until July 31.
- SC Arts Commission Awards 278 Grants in 40 Counties for Fiscal Year 2009
Wednesday, June 11, 2008 - The South Carolina Arts Commission has awarded $1,982,396 to South Carolina communities, arts organizations and schools for the 2008-2009 fiscal year. Funding in the programs of Arts in Education, Cultural Tourism, Folklife and Traditional Arts, General Operating Support and Subgranting will support 278 grantees in 40 counties.
- Brian Ray Named South Carolina First Novel Competition Winner
Friday, May 30, 2008 - The S.C. Arts Commission and its literary partners have named Brian Ray of Columbia the winner of the inaugural South Carolina First Novel Prize. Ray is receiving the opportunity to have his novel, “Girl With Her Throat Cut,” published by the Hub City Writers Project, an award-winning independent press in Spartanburg.

- Six SC Organizations Receive National Arts Grants
Wednesday, May 07, 2008 - The National Endowment for the Arts has awarded grants totaling $946,700 to six South Carolina organizations during its second round of fiscal 2008 funding. The grants are a part of $77.4 million in grants that the NEA is distributing to arts organizations throughout the country this quarter to support excellence in the arts, bring the arts to all Americans and provide leadership in arts in education.
- Governor McNair to be Honored at May 7 Anniversary Celebration
Thursday, April 24, 2008 - The S.C. Arts Foundation will pay tribute to the late Governor Robert E. McNair for his role in creating the S.C. Arts Commission on May 7 at the Columbia Museum of Art. The event takes place at 7 p.m. and includes food, entertainment and a silent auction of original works of art by 40 South Carolina artists.
- SC Student Advances to National Poetry Finals in DC
Thursday, April 10, 2008 - For the third year, South Carolina is sending one of its top students to Washington, D.C., for the chance to win a $20,000 scholarship prize based on her superior ability—not to shoot hoops or hit home runs—but to recite poetry.
- John Jakes to Speak at 2008 Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Awards Luncheon
Thursday, March 27, 2008 - Novelist John Jakes has accepted the S.C. Arts Foundation’s invitation to speak at the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner/Governor's Awards for the Arts luncheon at noon April 16 at the Marriott Hotel in Columbia. The Carolina First-sponsored luncheon follows a special Statehouse ceremony, where Jakes and six other recipients will receive Verner Awards, and two individuals will receive the Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Award.

Wednesday, March 05, 2008 - The South Carolina Arts Commission and the University of South Carolina's McKissick Museum have announced the recipients of the 2008 Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Award. This year's award winners are Will Moreau Goins from Columbia for Native American traditions and Richard “Chip” Chipman from Moncks Corner for bluegrass music advocacy.
- Statewide Initiative Focuses on Small Town Redevelopment
Monday, March 03, 2008 - Officials and concerned citizens of five South Carolina towns will spend a week in early March creating a new vision for a future of growth. Design Week, which runs March 3-8, pairs local officials with volunteer design professionals—including landscape architects and architects—to address social, economic and environmental issues the towns are facing.
- Nine S.C. High School Students to Compete for Chance at National Poetry Finals
Wednesday, February 27, 2008 - Competing for the chance to advance to the Poetry Out Loud National Finals in Washington, D.C. this April, students from high schools throughout the state competed in one of three regional competitions—Lowcountry, Midlands and Upstate— Feb. 9 – Feb. 24. Three finalists from each contest are advancing to the state competition, which takes place at 1 p.m. March 8 at the Columbia Museum of Art, during the 2008 South Carolina Poetry Out Loud State Finals and S.C. Teacher/Student Conference.
- 2008 Elizabeth ONeill Verner Awards Recipients Announced
Monday, February 25, 2008 - The board of the S.C. Arts Commission has selected seven recipients to receive this year’s Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Awards, the official Governor’s Awards for the Arts. Established in 1972, the annual awards are the highest honor the state gives in the arts and recognize outstanding achievement and contributions to the arts in South Carolina.
- National Symphony Orchestra Tours South Carolina Feb. 8-16
Tuesday, February 05, 2008 - National Symphony Orchestra members will participate in five orchestral concerts and more than 100 educational and outreach activities during its Feb. 8-16 South Carolina Residency.

Wednesday, January 30, 2008 - The South Carolina Arts Foundation has issued a call for artists to participate in the 2008 Verner Art Sale. The deadline to submit materials is March 3.
- S.C. Arts Commission Fellow’s Screenplay Goes to Hollywood
Thursday, November 29, 2007 - Dr. Howard Kingkade’s original screenplay, “Hole in the Paper Sky” premiers in Los Angeles in March. Iron Ocean Films, a production company co-owned by Los Angeles movie producer Michelle Purple, and film and TV actress Jessica Biel, purchased the screenplay in 2006. It was shot in Los Angeles in January 2007.

Tuesday, November 06, 2007 - The Southern Arts Federation has selected artwork by four South Carolina artists—Clay Burnette, Columbia; Philip Simmons, Charleston; Henrietta Snype, Mt. Pleasant; and Alice Ballard Munn, Greenville—to tour in the “Tradition/Innovation: American Masterpieces of Southern Craft and Traditional Art” exhibit. Wednesday, September 12, 2007 - The JohnF.Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts has accepted the S.C. Arts Commission’s invitation to make South Carolina the site of the National Symphony Orchestra’s 2008 American Residency. The announcement was made after the unveiling of the Arts Commission’s new logo Monday at the 2007 Statewide Arts Conference in Newberry.
- Two New Members Appointed to South Carolina Arts Commission Board
Monday, August 13, 2007 - Barbara R. Nwokike of Charleston and Henry Horowitz of Greenville have been appointed by Governor Mark Sanford to serve on the board of the South Carolina Arts Commission. Both will work with the board to govern the state agency charged with creating a thriving arts environment that benefits all South Carolinians.

Thursday, March 22, 2007 - The South Carolina Arts Commission has awarded Quarterly Project Support grants to five arts organizations across the state. The organizations are the City of Dillon, Dillon County; The Community Workshop Choir, Anderson County; Oconee Conservatory of Fine Arts, Oconee County; SC Hispanic Leadership Council, Richland County; and the Town of Ridgeway, Fairfield County.

Wednesday, March 14, 2007 - Nine high school students from across the state competed in Columbia Saturday in the state competition for the national Poetry Out Loud contest. Samara L.A. Simmons, a student from Academic Magnet High School in Charleston, was selected to advance to the National Endowment of the Arts’ Poetry Out Loud national finals April 30 – May 1.
