The South Carolina General Assembly has designated a 30-mile segment of the Catawba River and a 57-mile segment of the Lynches River as State Scenic Rivers. The legislation was signed on June 11, 2008, by Governor Mark Sanford.
Gov. Sanford signs new Santee Cooper striped bass regulations

Governor Mark Sanford signed new striped bass regulations into effect on May 21, 2008 for the Santee Cooper system. The new regulations will act as a first step to combat the population decline of the striped bass fishery in the Santee Cooper System by reducing the amount of fish an angler can harvest, as well as increasing the minimum size limits.
Alligator hunting season applications now available online

The General Assembly recently passed legislation to allow for an alligator hunting season beginning this fall. Anyone taking an alligator, regardless of the season or program, must have a South Carolina Hunting License, DNR Alligator Harvest Permit and an Alligator Harvest Tag with them while afield.

The State Climatology Office and the National Weather Service are looking for more than 1,000 volunteers scattered across the state to measure and report the rain, snow, sleet or hail that falls on their homes, farms, or businesses. As the severe drought lingers, Gov. Mark Sanford is encouraging all South Carolinians to voluntarily conserve water. According to the SC Department of Natural Resources’ Hydrology Office, 14 of the 17 monitored streams are now at the extreme drought level.

The S.C. Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement received a call Aug. 12 at about 11 a.m. that a possible injured loggerhead turtle was sighted in Murrells Inlet near Capt. Dicks Marina. Region 4 Law Enforcement Officer Maurice Pruitt responded and found a debilitated loggerhead turtle.

Commercial shrimp season to close Jan. 15

DNR will close the SC commercial shrimping season in state waters on January 15th at 7:00 p.m. Provisional trawling areas along the seaward state water line will close January 20th at 7:00 p.m. The spring white roe shrimp crop was above average and the summer brown shrimp catches were the lowest recorded over the course of the season since 1979.

The Conservation Fund and The Nature Conservancy announced that they would acquire 25,668 acres in Marion County known as the Woodbury tract and 13,281 acres in Hampton County known as Hamilton Ridge, from International Paper. The agreement comes just as Gov. Mark Sanford signed into law a measure that would allow the SC Heritage Trust to borrow about $32 million for forest acquisition across the state. The Heritage Trust is a 30-year-old division of the state’s Department of Natural Resources.

A groundbreaking new conservation deal has ensured that nearly 39,000 acres of working forestland, recreation lands and wildlife habitat in South Carolina will be protected. Legislation that will benefit the protection of diamondback terrapins was recently passed by the South Carolina General Assembly. The bill, now enacted into state law, revamps a previous law which was set back in 2000 and rescinds the S.C. Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) authority to issue permits for those interested in harvesting and marketing terrapins.
