Press Release:

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Individual artists working in visual arts, craft, media production and screenwriting are invited to apply for 2008 South Carolina Arts Commission Fellowships. The application deadline is October 1, 2006.

The Arts Commission has made changes in its Individual Artist Fellowship program based on research, evaluations and input from artists around the state.

The Arts Commission Board has approved the following program changes:
fellowship awards will increase from $2,500 to $5,000 each
award maximum per lifetime will increase from two awards to three
six fellowships will be awarded annually based on new rotation cycle

“Feedback from artists has been instrumental to the enhancement of this program and the creation of a rotation schedule that acknowledges artists from a wide variety of disciplines,” said SC Arts Commission Executive Director Suzette Surkamer. “We expect these changes to have a positive impact on the Artist Fellowship program as we continue our history of rewarding South Carolina’s exceptional individual artists for their artistic excellence and commitment to the arts.”

The new category rotation cycle, available in its entirety at www.SouthCarolinaArts.com, will alternate the following disciplines: visual arts, craft, media, prose, poetry, dance, music and theatre. Alternates will also be named in each category. Fellows and alternates are selected through a competitive, anonymous application process. Out-of-state review panelists make recommendations for selections based solely on a review of work samples. The panel's recommendations are approved by the board of the SC Arts Commission.
