COLUMBIA, S.C. – An exhibition of works of art acquired by the South Carolina Arts Commission for the State Art Collection during 1987–2006 is on public view at the Sumter Gallery of Art from April 7–June 25.
The show will be divided into two parts. Part one of show is April 7–May 14 and features art work acquired during 1987–1991 from 55 artists, representing a variety of media and 14 counties across the state. These artists are listed on page two. Part two of the exhibition is May 19–June 25, and includes work acquired from 1992-2006.
Highlighting the work of 101 South Carolina artists, this will be the first major retrospective exhibition of the State Art Collection since it was shown in its entirety at the SC State Museum in 1987. The gallery is located at 200 Hasel Street, Patriot Hall Center, Sumter. Hours are Tuesday–Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
The State Art Collection is considered the most comprehensive public collection of works by contemporary South Carolina artists, and currently 442 works are included in the collection. Small exhibitions featuring work from the collection are organized on a regular basis for rural and isolated areas inside and outside of the state. Works from the State Art Collection are available for loan to art museums, state agencies, and public and private organizations for the purpose of public exhibition or public display.
