
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The S.C. Arts Commission welcomes its newly elected board member, Dr. Sarah Lynn Hayes. She has been appointed by Governor Mark Sanford to serve on the board of the state agency, which works to create a thriving arts environment that benefits all South Carolinians.
“Dr. Hayes brings an incredible wealth of knowledge to the Arts Commission from her experience working in all levels of education. She also has a great appreciation for the arts,” said S.C. Arts Commission Executive Director Suzette Surkamer. “We’re excited to have her join our agency in its mission to make the arts accessible to citizens throughout the state.”
Hayes, the director of Fine Arts and Gifted and Talented programs for the Rock Hill School District Three, has experience in K-4 – 12th grade, and in higher education. She serves as the district coordinator for the John F. Kennedy Center Partners in Education Program, and is currently the president of the Arts Council of York County.
She holds a Doctor of Philosophy in elementary/early childhood education from the University of South Carolina, and a Master of Education in administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She is the immediate past president of the Boys and Girls Clubs of York County, an organization that awarded her a National Medallion for Service.
The governing body of the S.C. Arts Commission is composed of nine volunteer citizens appointed at large by the governor and confirmed by the Senate for the purpose of guiding the development of the arts in the state.
