The South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum is hosting its 4th Annual Living History Day, conducted by the Palmetto Living History Association, on Saturday, March 24, 2007. The Living History Day campsite will be at the Columbia Mills Building, 301 Gervais Street, and is open to the public from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM.
Uniformed participants will interpret the South Carolina Civil War soldier in the Hampton Legion, which included three branches of military service (infantry, artillery, and cavalry) under a single commander. Living historians will provide a thorough view of military culture of the time by conducting detailed tours of the campsite and demonstrations of uniform and equipage, drill, and infantry firing. Other exciting events include the hourly firing of a Civil War-era Chester cannon, interpreted by an artillery crew, and cavalry demonstrations with participants on horseback. In addition, there will be a display and interpretation of the Southern home front.
There is no charge to attend the event. The museum, located in the Columbia Mills Building, will be open on Saturday from 10:00AM-5:00PM. Admission is $4 ages 21 and over. A joint ticket with the SC State Museum is available for $6 ages 21 and over.
Founded in 1896, the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum is the oldest museum in the Columbia area and is an agency of the South Carolina Budget and Control Board, accredited by the American Association of Museums.
