This week’s new video on the SC Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum’s YouTube Channel features Krissy Dunn Johnson, Curator of History, explaining the unique history of the Confederate section of Columbia's historic Elmwood Cemetery, which plays a central role in the annual Confederate Memorial Day ceremonies. Soon after the Civil War, Columbia residents began holding yearly ceremonies to honor the dead and decorate the graves, a tradition that continues today. Interestingly, several Union soldiers are buried directly in front of the Confederate section…watch the video to find out why!
The museum’s site video can be accessed by visiting www.crr.sc.gov/videos or http://www.youtube.com/SCCRRMM. After creating a free YouTube account visitors choose to subscribe to the channel by clicking the “Subscribe” button in the top right hand corner of the page. New videos are added regularly.
Founded in 1896, the SC Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum is the oldest museum in the Columbia area. The museum focuses on South Carolina’s military history from the Revolutionary War to the present War on Terror.
