SCDCA TO SPONSOR SPRING CLEANING SHRED DAY
(PAPER PRODUCTS ONLY)

Columbia, SC… …The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs (SCDCA) will sponsor its 2nd Annual Shred Day and “After Hours: Identity Theft” to help consumers and businesses get a jump on their spring-cleaning and provide crucial protection against and education about identity theft. The event will be held at the Department located on 3600 Forest Drive in Columbia on Tuesday, March 20, 2007.

Global Paper Shredding, Inc. and Shred 360 will provide shredding services free of charge for consumers and businesses. SCDCA staff will also be on-site to answer consumers’ questions about identity theft. Consumers and businesses are invited to come by during one of the following times: 6:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

REMINDER: PAPER PRODUCTS ONLY

At 5:45 p.m. SCDCA will also host “After Hours: Identity Theft” to address the growing problem of stolen identities. Twenty-seven million Americans have had their identity stolen in the last five years. Additionally, as many as 80 percent of credit reports contain inaccuracies. Along with shredding sensitive information, receiving a free copy of your credit report from each of the three major credit reporting agencies will help protect you against identity theft. “After Hours: Identity Theft” will address these issues and provide other tips for keeping your information safe.

With tax season in full swing, SCDCA encourages consumers and businesses to keep careful record of tax forms and other papers with sensitive personal and financial information. Consumers and businesses should dispose of outdated or unnecessary paper trash in a safe and timely manner. Shred Day provides the perfect opportunity to do this, and “After Hours: Identity Theft” provides additional education to minimize the risks of becoming a victim of identity theft.
