Press Release:

COLUMBIA – The S.C. Department of Health & Environmental Control’s Region 7 has begun a Color Me Healthy program with BCD Headstart to address obesity among children in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties.

“Nationally, 33 percent of children between three and five years old have a body mass index above 85 percent,” said Karen Warren, DHEC’s Region 7 program manager for BabyNet and Children’s Rehabilitation Services. “We started the Color Me Healthy program to make families aware of this problem and help them find ways to be healthier.”

Warren said the Color Me Healthy program works to make good nutrition and physical activity a part of everyday activities for children in preschool and daycare.

“We chose to begin the program with the BCD Headstart as they cover Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties with an enrollment of 1584 children,” she said. “The Color Me Healthy curriculum can be expanded to any preschool or daycare.”

Anyone interested in the program should call (843) 792-3561.
