COLUMBIA, S.C. - Wackenhut Services Inc., has been recognized as one of the newest members of the South Carolina Environmental Excellence Program (SCEEP), the state Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.
“Wackenhut Services Inc. (WSI-SRS) is contracted by the U.S. Department of Energy to provide comprehensive security services at the 310 square-mile Savannah Rive Site,” said Bob King, DHEC’s deputy commissioner for Environmental Quality Control. “The company has shown a commitment to environmental excellence and support of our goal of improving the state’s environment by utilizing its ISO 14001 certified environmental management system to manage its environmental programs and foster continual improvement in its environmental performance.
“WSI-SRS has set significant goals of reducing its carbon footprint and greenhouse gases.” King said. “Over the past three years, efforts have resulted in 7 percent reduction of petroleum usage.”
According to King, 66 percent of WSI-SRS’s fleet vehicles use E-85 on a daily basis, and the company has a goal of using E-85 daily in 100 percent of its fleet.
SCEEP is a voluntary initiative designed to recognize and reward South Carolina facilities that have demonstrated environmental performance through pollution prevention, energy and resource conservation, and the use of an environmental management system. DHEC has supported the program since its creation in 1997 and there are 34 members.
