COLUMBIA, S.C. - Wren High School in Piedmont has won a Champions of the Environment grant for efforts to spread the word about water pollution prevention, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.
“‘Wren Champions of Water Quality’ are taking the lead in their community when it comes to educating themselves about water quality,” said Lynne LaSalle, coordinator for Champions of the Environment. “The students plan on sharing the information they gather with the community.”
LaSalle said the project will involve almost a quarter of the student body at Wren High School. It includes water quality testing, researching water pollution causes, writing and illustrating water quality messages, and translating pollution prevention messages into other languages spoken in the community.
“Water quality is a very timely topic in the Upstate,” LaSalle said. “It is great that these local Champions of Water Quality will supply their community with the information needed to make informed decisions regarding water quality issues.”
Wren High will receive a $2,000 cash grant. The school will also receive Champions give-away items, be featured on the Champions’ Web site, and a commercial will be made about the project and aired on WIS-TV in Columbia and WCSC-TV in Charleston.
Champions of the Environment supports environmental action in South Carolina’s kindergarten through 12th grade students through its grant award program. Champions is sponsored by DHEC, Eastman Chemical Company, International Paper, WCSC-TV and WIS-TV, with assistance from the Environmental Education Association of South Carolina. Applications for Champions’ next round of grants are due January 15.
