Press Release:

SC Notables Share Memories of Favorite Teachers

Columbia – Ask someone about their favorite teacher and more than likely, you will hear a story about an individual who made a tremendous impact – someone who opened up worlds and recognized potential.

To recognize the role of teachers in their students’ lives, successful South Carolina notables are sharing stories about their favorite teachers in the "Outstanding Teachers Make Outstanding Schools" project by the SC Education Oversight Committee (EOC). The stories are compiled online and are being released in conjunction with National Education Week, November 12-16, 2007.

The project includes quotes from South Carolina notables ranging from Congressman Joe Wilson to Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott.

The 2007 project expands the EOC’s "Teachers: Moving SC To The Top" campaign, which began in 2003 to show support for and recognize teacher efforts to achieve the 2010 education goal of ranking in the top half of states nationally. This year we will feature SC Notables speaking about how teachers have touched their lives, as well as ideas and activities for parents and students to show teacher appreciation. Items from the 2003 campaign included posters; a blueprint for students to organize a teacher recognition program; and sample letters of appreciation to teachers for students, parents, and businesses.

Both the 2007"Outstanding Teachers Make Outstanding Schools" stories and items from the 2003 campaign are accessible through the EOC website (at www.eoc.sc.gov) by clicking on the

"Outstanding Teachers Make Outstanding Schools" recognizes the tremendous role teachers play in the lives of the students they teach" said EOC Chairman Harold Stowe. "The impact is seen in so many facets of our lives."

Stowe said South Carolinians who were invited but did not submit their stories are still encouraged to do so, as they will be added with the others.

The SC Education Oversight Committee is an independent, non-partisan group made up of 18 educators, business persons, and elected leaders. Created in 1998, the committee is dedicated to reporting facts, measuring change, and promoting progress within South Carolina’s education system.
