Press Release:

ColumbiaMonday, November 17-23, 2008 is National Education Week. Thank a teacher for making schools great!

Teachers in South Carolina and in communities across the nation will be in the spotlight this week as students, parents, school administrators and the general publics learn how teachers are making schools great for children.

National Educational Week is recognized annually for the purpose of informing the public of the accomplishments and needs of the public schools and to secure the cooperation and support of the public in meeting those needs. This is a good time to learn about the contributions educators make to our community every day. We can recognize them as role models. That brings satisfaction. It also brings community responsibility. Better than an apple or a thank you card, a community’s active support of the work teachers do to teach and care for the community’s students is ample reward.

This year the SC Education Oversight Committee will feature teachers on its website in honor of National Education Week. Items from previous campaigns feature SC Notables writing about how teachers have touched their lives, as well as ideas and activities for parents and students to show teacher appreciation. Posters; a blueprint for students to organize a teacher recognition program; and sample letters of appreciation to teachers for students, parents, and businesses are included as well.

The “Outstanding Teachers Make Outstanding Schools” stories and other items are accessible through the EOC website (at www.eoc.sc.gov ) by clicking on the http://eoc.sc.gov/informationforfamilies/teachercampaign07.htm link.

The SC Education Oversight Committee is an independent, non-partisan group made up of 18 educators, business persons, and elected leaders. Created in 1998, the committee is dedicated to reporting facts, measuring change, and promoting progress within South Carolina’s education system.
