(Columbia, SC)  Fourteen South Carolina forest firefighters have just completed special training as wildland fire crew supervisors.  The three-day nationally certified Crew Boss course was presented by the SC Forestry Commission early in July.

Wildland crew bosses must be able to manage 20 or more firefighters under conditions that are physically and emotionally stressful. The training, limited to people who are themselves experienced forest firefighters, focuses on supervisory, organizational, and administrative skills.

According to Forestry Commission Training Director Debbie Price, this is one in a series of wildland firefighting leadership courses.  Courses designed to hone the supervisor’s tactical skills with fire engines and bulldozers are scheduled for later this summer.
