Timber Cutter Arrested for Midlands Log Theft

(Columbia, SC)  A Winnsboro logger is under arrest for stealing timber from a Richland County landowner.  Forestry Commission agents charged James Otis Young, 69, with stealing more than $2000 worth of timber.

Agents said a Hopkins area landowner reported the theft in early April.  Investigating officeJames Otis Youngrs found that small quantities of sawlogs had been cut from the property several times over a two-month period.  Evidence found at the scene led agents to Young.

Young was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.  His record shows several other arrests for timber crimes in the midlands.

Timber theft is a felony under South Carolina law.  If convicted, Young could be sentenced to up to five years in prison.
