
COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of five people being killed on state roads and highways from Friday, October 2 at 6 p.m. until Sunday, October 4, at midnight.
As of October 4, 681 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 703 highway deaths in this same time period in 2008.
Of the 518 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2009, 306 were not wearing seat belts. There have been 26 fatal collisions where the use of seat belts is unknown.
Through midnight October 4, 63 pedestrians, 75 motorcyclists and 10 bicyclists have died on state roads and highways.
These numbers are preliminary and are based on fatal collisions reported to the South Carolina Highway Patrol and by the media as of midnight October 4, 2009.
