COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of six people being killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, October 30 at 6 p.m. until Sunday, November 1, at midnight.

As of November 1, 748 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 775 highway deaths in this same time period in 2008.

Of the 565 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2009, 331 were not wearing seat belts. There have been 32 fatal collisions where the use of seat belts is unknown.

Through midnight November 1, 74 pedestrians, 81 motorcyclists and 11 bicyclists have died on state roads and highways.

These numbers are preliminary and are based on fatal collisions reported to the South Carolina Highway Patrol and by the media as of midnight November 1, 2009.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety includes the Highway Patrol, Office of Highway Safety, State Transport Police, Bureau of Protective Services, Office of Justice Programs and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Hall of Fame.
